Shooting for the lunar south pole

The centrepiece of the year is the Chang'e-7 mission, a robotic expedition aimed at the Moon's south pole. It is targeted to launch in the second half of 2026 atop a Long March 5 rocket from the Wenchang spaceport, heading for the vicinity of Shackleton crater, a region of intense scientific interest because of the water ice believed to lurk in its permanently shadowed depths.

Chang'e-7 is not a single craft but a small fleet, comprising a lander, a rover and a mini flying probe designed to hop into shadowed craters where sunlight never reaches. That water ice matters enormously, because if it can be mined and processed, it could one day supply drinking water, breathable oxygen and even rocket fuel for a sustained human presence.

The choice of the south pole is telling. It is the very same region NASA is aiming for with its Artemis program, which means the two great powers are converging on the same small patch of lunar real estate, setting up one of the defining geopolitical contests of the coming decade.

The road to a crewed landing

Behind the robotic missions, the crewed lunar effort is progressing on multiple fronts. Development of the key flight hardware is reported to be advancing smoothly, including the powerful Long March-10 carrier rocket, the Mengzhou crewed spacecraft that will carry the astronauts, and the Lanyue lander that will actually set them down on the surface.

The timeline is concrete rather than speculative. A first joint test mission of the full system is planned for 2028 or 2029, with the first crew expected to walk on the Moon roughly a year afterward. That sequencing, testing the whole stack before committing humans, mirrors the cautious, step-by-step engineering philosophy that has come to define the program.

China is even reaching beyond the Moon. Its Tianwen-2 probe is expected to encounter a near-Earth asteroid known as Kamoʻoalewa around the middle of the year, extending the country's ambitions from lunar exploration into the wider solar system and the growing field of small-body science.

Taken together, 2026 reveals a program that is broad, well-funded and relentlessly consistent. Whether or not China reaches the Moon exactly on schedule, its steady accumulation of capability has already transformed the global space landscape, ensuring the next chapter of exploration will be written by more than one nation.
