For over two decades, one structure has served as humanity's permanent home away from home, orbiting our planet roughly every ninety minutes. The International Space Station has hosted astronauts from around the world and enabled countless scientific breakthroughs. But this remarkable outpost is now approaching the end of its extraordinary life.
A planned and fiery farewell
After nearly three decades of continuous operation, the station is scheduled to be retired around the end of this decade. Its ageing hardware, subjected to relentless stress and the harsh environment of space, simply cannot keep flying safely forever, and the time to plan its ending has arrived.
Its departure will be anything but gentle. Rather than being left to drift dangerously, the station will be deliberately guided down into the atmosphere, where most of it will burn up before the remaining debris falls into a remote stretch of ocean, ending its journey with a spectacular, controlled plunge.

The contenders racing to orbit
Several ambitious ventures are now competing to build the successors to the station. One partnership between a major space company and an established aerospace firm is developing a spacious orbital complex, envisioning it as a mixed-use business park floating high above the Earth for a variety of tenants.
Another firm is moving quickly with plans to launch a smaller, initial station capable of supporting a modest crew, intending to establish an early foothold before expanding. The strategy is to get something operational in orbit sooner rather than perfecting a giant complex first.
To smooth the transition, the space agency has already been sending private astronaut missions up to the existing station, using them as a training ground. These flights help commercial partners learn the ropes of launching, operating and returning crews before their own stations are ready to receive visitors.
Promise and peril ahead
The vision is exhilarating, but the risks are real. Building and operating a space station is fiendishly difficult and staggeringly expensive, and there is no guarantee that these commercial ventures will be ready in time, or that they will be able to turn a sustainable profit once they are.
There is genuine concern that delays could leave a period where no continuously crewed outpost circles the Earth, a symbolic and scientific setback that many are anxious to avoid. The race is therefore not just about ambition, but about timing and reliability under intense pressure.
Even so, the coming years promise one of the most significant transitions in the history of human spaceflight. As one iconic station prepares to blaze its final trail across the sky, a new and more commercial chapter of life in orbit is preparing, quietly, to begin.
