How Artemis II Reopened the Road to the Moon, and What Has to Happen Next

In April 2026, Artemis II carried four astronauts around the Moon and back, the first crewed lunar voyage in more than 50 years. Here is what the mission proved, and what still stands between NASA and an actual landing.

For the first time in more than half a century, human beings left the neighborhood of Earth and traveled to the Moon. Artemis II, NASA's long-awaited crewed test flight, launched on April 1, 2026, and returned ten days later, marking the first time astronauts had journeyed toward the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. It was also the first crewed flight of the Orion spacecraft, and for all its careful, deliberate goals, it carried an unmistakable weight: the road to the Moon, closed for two generations, was open again.

A crew of firsts

The four people aboard made the mission historic before it even left the pad. Commander Reid Wiseman and pilot Victor Glover were joined by mission specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency. Among them were the first woman and the first Black astronaut ever assigned to a lunar mission, along with the first Canadian to travel to the Moon, a deliberate signal that this new era of exploration would look different from the all-male Apollo crews that came before it.

Ten days that put Orion to the test

Artemis II was not a landing, and was never meant to be one. Launched atop the powerful Space Launch System rocket, the crew spent close to ten days looping out to the Moon and back on a free-return trajectory, never touching the surface. Along the way they set a record for the farthest distance from Earth ever traveled by humans, before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego on April 10. The point was not spectacle but verification: proving that Orion can keep a crew alive, oriented and in contact with home across the quarter-million miles to the Moon.

Why a flyby was the whole point

It is tempting to see a mission that skips the landing as a half-measure, but that reading misunderstands how spaceflight is built. Artemis II was a shakedown cruise, the crewed follow-up to the uncrewed Artemis I of 2022, designed to stress-test the life-support systems, navigation, communications and hand controls with real people depending on them. Above all it validated the spacecraft's ability to bring a crew safely through a punishing atmospheric re-entry at roughly 25,000 miles per hour. Each of those checks removes a way the next, far riskier mission could go wrong.

The hard part still lies ahead

The next step, Artemis III, is meant to be the first crewed landing on the Moon since 1972, aimed at the resource-rich south pole where shadowed craters may hold water ice. Getting there, however, depends on pieces that are still being proven: a lunar lander derived from SpaceX's Starship, new spacesuits built for the harsh polar terrain, and the orbital refueling needed to send that hardware to the Moon. Artemis II cleared the human spaceflight hurdle; the landing hardware is now the critical path, and its timeline remains the biggest open question of the program.

A milestone, not a finish line

In recognition of the flight, the Artemis II crew received the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, a reminder of how rare and demanding a crewed lunar voyage remains. Yet the deeper significance of the mission is what it changes about the future rather than the past. For fifty years, sending people to the Moon was something humanity used to be able to do. After ten days in April 2026, it is once again something we can do, and the whole ambition of the Artemis program is to turn that single capability into a lasting presence.
