Betelgeuse is one of the most recognizable stars in the night sky, a colossal red supergiant marking the shoulder of the constellation Orion, and for as long as people have watched it, its restless changes in brightness have invited wonder. Now astronomers have answered a question that has hovered over the star for roughly a century: it was never shining alone.
A Suspicion a Century Old
The strange, rhythmic dimming of Betelgeuse has been recorded for more than a thousand years, but about a hundred years ago astronomers first floated a bold explanation for one of its slower cycles: perhaps a second, smaller star was orbiting the giant and periodically disturbing the light that reaches us here on Earth.
For decades the idea remained a hypothesis without a face, because a faint companion sitting almost on top of a star as blindingly bright as Betelgeuse is one of the hardest possible targets in observational astronomy, easily swallowed by the overwhelming glare of the supergiant beside it.
Caught by the Very Large Telescope
That changed with the clearest image ever captured of the companion, a star now designated Betelgeuse B, resolved directly next to the supergiant rather than merely inferred from indirect signals. The result turns a long-running theory into a confirmed, visible observation.
The breakthrough came from the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile, with the work led by Miguel Montargès of the Observatoire de Paris, whose team managed to tease the faint companion out of the glare that had hidden it from generations of astronomers.
Pulling that off required pushing the instruments to their limits, since the companion is vastly dimmer than Betelgeuse and separated from it by only a tiny angle on the sky, a punishing combination that had defeated earlier attempts to catch it in a direct image.
Heavier Than Anyone Expected

The observations did more than confirm the companion existed; they also delivered a genuine surprise about its nature. The data indicate that Betelgeuse B carries roughly two to three times the mass of our Sun, considerably more than astronomers had assumed.
That figure matters because the companion had originally been thought to be a far more modest star, something in the neighborhood of a single solar mass, so finding it two to three times heavier reshapes the picture of exactly what kind of pair these two stars actually form.
Taken together, the results firmly establish Betelgeuse as a binary system, two stars bound in a shared gravitational dance, rather than the solitary giant it has always appeared to be from our distant vantage point far across the galaxy.
Rewinding the Supernova Clock
There is a deeper consequence, too, because Betelgeuse is famous not only for its brightness but for being one of the nearest stars expected to end its life in a spectacular supernova, an event astronomers watch for with keen anticipation.
A companion complicates that forecast. As Montargès put it, if the two stars have interacted or will interact, that relationship could either delay or accelerate the moment when the supergiant finally explodes, adding a new variable to a countdown scientists thought they broadly understood.
For now, the discovery is a reminder that even the most familiar points of light still hold secrets. A star humanity has watched for millennia has just revealed a hidden partner, and in doing so has both solved an old mystery and opened a fresh set of questions about how, and when, its story will end.
